Biography
for Alison Schneider - Jepson Vineyards Winemaker and
Distiller
The
road that leads someone to winemaking seems to have
many turns and Alison Schneider's has some interesting
speed bumps. Armed with a degree in journalism and public
relations, Ms. Schneider worked for an advertising agency
in St. Louis where her main client was Jack Daniels
whiskey.
Along
with a passion for travel and good food, she enjoyed
working in restaurants in her college years and beyond.
That interest led her to Seattle where she landed a
job as a 'cellar rat' at Chateau St. Michelle Winery.
Wanting to be involved with making superlative Zinfandel,
a variety not grown in Washington State, Alison set
off for California to gain additional winemaking skills.
Where to look for that job was decided by a drive to
the beautiful Northern California Coast. She knew then
that this is where she wanted to make her home.
In
1993, shortly after her arrival in California she was
hired by winemaker, Randy Ullom, to be the Production
Coordinator at De Loach Vineyards in Sonoma County.
During that time, she extended her knowledge by taking
chemistry and viticulture courses. After Randy's departure
and now under winemaker Dan Cederquist's skillful tutelage,
Ms. Schneider was promoted to Assistant Winemaker in
1996 followed by a rapid promotion to Winemaker in 1998.
Dan remarks that besides being a 'one-person human resource
department for the winemaking office, she is also a
gifted palette', something that is difficult to teach
but necessary for producing world-class wines. The pair
worked closely together to oversee the production of
De Loach Vineyards 170,000 case winery including two
separate crush facilities housing several thousand barrels.
The
2000 vintage brought exciting winemaking changes for
Ms. Schneider as she joined the 'Jepson Family' as Head
Winemaker. Her extensive experience working with both
red and white varietals makes her a tremendous asset
and welcome addition to Jepson Vineyards, Winery and
Distillery.
Away
from the winery, Alison has a passion for travel and
dining. She loves good food and wine. The seasoned student,
Alison is always taking classes of some kind, most recently
her favorite area of study is the Italian language and
Business Law. A natural athlete, she loves swimming
and running.

Biography - PHYLLIS ZOUZOUNAS
Winemaker - Mazzocco
It
was an unofficial wine appreciation course that set
Phyllis Zouzounas on her own course toward becoming
a winemaker. Phyllis, a native San Franciscan, made
visits to the legendary Ridge Vineyards in the Santa
Cruz Mountains in the early 1970s. There she met Ridge
co-founder and its first winemaker, the late David Bennion,
and the two struck up a friendship.
"I
met David before I got into the wine business,"
Phyllis recalls, "and he became a mentor. His passion
for wine and his knowledge of the vineyards and winemaking
really made an impression on me. I had the opportunity
to taste a lot of wonderful wines and learn from one
of the pioneers in California winemaking."
Phyllis
and her husband moved to Sonoma County in 1970 to start
a jewelry business and dabble in home winemaking. The
winemaking hobby turned into a career in 1980, when
Phyllis accepted a tasting room job at Dry Creek Vineyard
in Healdsburg while waiting for a position to open up
in the cellar. Once it did, Phyllis progressed from
cellarhand to cellarmaster to assistant winemaker, supplementing
her work with chemistry studies, UC Davis winemaking
and viticulture courses and cellar school in Napa Valley.
In
1993, the winemaking position became available at Mazzocco
and Phyllis was a natural for the job, based on her
knowledge of Sonoma County viticulture, 12 years of
winemaking experience at Dry Creek Vineyard and her
much-respected palate. In 1995, Tom and Yvonne Mazzocco
further strengthened their team by hiring Duff Bevill
to manage their vineyards. Duff and Phyllis had worked
together at Dry Creek Vineyard and were rejoined at
Mazzocco.
Working
with Duff, Phyllis has expanded the Mazzocco Zinfandel
program, which now includes four vineyard-designated
Zins in addition to the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel.
She added small lots of Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc
as white-wine companions to the signature Chardonnay
River Lane Vineyards, and continues to refine Mazzocco's
proprietary Bordeaux-style blend, Matrix.
"Our
focus is on making the best wine we can; that focus
starts in the vineyard and doesn't end until the wine
is in the bottle," Phyllis says. "Everyone
here, from the owners to the tasting room staff, has
the same goal."

Lodestar
is a Mission Olive Oil produced by the Olive Branch
Ranch in Oroville, California. The Johansson family
has been cultivating their 70 year old orchard since
1993.
In
this age of corporate agriculture, it is rare to find
a food company who can tell you the name of everyone
who has handled your family's food. Having one name
brand also insures that we do not hide inferior oil
under separate brands. We do not buy cheap "olive cannery
culls" and attempt to dilute bitter oil with a scant
amount of quality oil. Using Lodestar Olive Oil guarantees
you a consistent product.
